Sustainability, renewable energy and the circular economy are stated priorities of the EU Commission under President Ursula von der Leyen, who has outlined Europe’s plans for a Green New Deal. A key element of this strategy is the “new European Bauhaus” initiative, inspired by Germany’s hugely influential design school of the 1920s, the original Bauhaus founded by the architect Walter Gropius.
