The ESS is an international research facility and one of the largest scientific infrastructures in Europe to have completed civil construction.
It will house the world’s most powerful neutron source and provide a research environment for a wide range of disciplines, including life and environmental sciences, energy, medicine and transport.
Buro Happold designed this spectacular and functional steel structure to meet the high-performance demands of the research facility. The roof not only creates an iconic visual identity for the ESS, but it also fulfils important structural functions.
In this video, team members Adam Pekala (Buro Happold Project Leader), Paul Roberts (Buro Happold Copenhagen Office Director) and Lars Rehn (Design Coordinator for the Target Building at ESS) explore some of our structural and facade engineering design solutions.
